In short

What is business background music — and how does it work in the Kingdom?

Business background music is the curated soundtrack a company plays for its customers — in a shop, restaurant, hotel or mall — matched to the brand, scheduled by time of day and cleared for commercial background use. A personal Spotify or Apple Music account is licensed for private listening only and does not cover business use anywhere, Saudi Arabia included. Araya designs the playlists, supplies the music and keeps every site sounding right, streaming through the speakers you already have.

Local know-how

What shapes the sound in Saudi Arabia

Good programming is local. Audience mix, trading hours and the calendar all change what the right playlist looks like.

A fast-changing retail scene

New malls, flagship stores and destination restaurants are opening at pace across Riyadh and Jeddah. Sound is part of how those brands differentiate, not an afterthought bolted on at handover.

Arabic and international blends

Many Saudi brands want a Khaleeji or Arabic-leaning identity in some zones and international pop or lounge in others. We schedule those shifts by zone and by hour rather than running one playlist everywhere.

Late trading and Ramadan hours

Trading patterns run late, and Ramadan reshapes the whole day. Suhoor, iftar and post-iftar footfall each need their own energy, planned before the month starts.

A maturing IP framework

Copyright in the Kingdom is administered by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property, and enforcement has been tightening. Using properly licensed commercial music removes the question entirely.

Licensing & the law

Music played to customers is a public performance

Saudi copyright protection is administered by the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP), with the framework set out in the Kingdom's Copyright Law. Playing recorded music to customers in a venue is a use beyond private listening, so it needs to come from a source licensed for that purpose. Consumer streaming apps are not — their own terms limit them to personal, non-commercial use.

  • Every song carries two rights — the recording and the composition
  • Consumer streaming accounts never cover playing music to customers
  • Keep written confirmation of your music licence on file, per site
  • Live performance and ticketed events sit outside background music cover
