In short

What is commercial background music — and what does Qatar require?

Commercial background music is the curated soundtrack a business plays for its customers, matched to the brand, scheduled across the day and cleared for commercial background use. Qatar protects copyright and neighbouring rights under Law No. 7 of 2002, which reserves public communication of a work to the rights holder. That means a personal streaming account is not a lawful source for a venue. Araya supplies the music and it streams through the sound system you already have.

Local know-how

What shapes the sound in Qatar

Good programming is local. Audience mix, trading hours and the calendar all change what the right playlist looks like.

An international audience

Doha's hospitality and retail venues serve residents, business travellers and tourists in the same hour. Playlists need to feel international without sliding into generic hotel-lobby wallpaper.

Hospitality-led expectations

Qatar's five-star hotel density sets the benchmark. Lobby, pool, spa and restaurant each need their own register, zoned separately and volume-matched to the room.

Seasonal and Ramadan shifts

Cooler months bring outdoor dining and late evenings; Ramadan changes the whole rhythm. Both get their own scheduled programmes rather than a manual volume change.

A clear copyright framework

Law No. 7 of 2002 on the Protection of Copyright and Neighbouring Rights governs the use of protected works in Qatar, including communicating them to the public.

Licensing & the law

Playing music to customers is a public use

Qatar's Law No. 7 of 2002 on the Protection of Copyright and Neighbouring Rights gives rights holders control over communicating their work to the public. Playing recorded music in a shop, restaurant or hotel falls into that category, so the music has to come from a source licensed for commercial use. Consumer apps such as Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube are licensed for private listening only.

  • Every song carries two rights — the recording and the composition
  • Consumer streaming accounts never cover playing music to customers
  • Keep written confirmation of your music licence on file, per site
  • Live music and ticketed events may need separate permission
